GitHub Takes Aim at Open Source Software Vulnerabilities

Image
OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE   has the potential to be very secure. Unlike proprietary code that can only be accessed directly by its own developers, anyone can vet   open source projects   to spot flaws and bugs. In practice, though, being open source is no panacea. Now, code repository GitHub is rolling out new tools for its GitHub Advanced Security suite that will make it easier to root out vulnerabilities in the open source projects managed on its platform. Open source code present a few security challenges. In practice there aren't always enough people with the right expertise looking at it. And open source projects are generally ad hoc; they don't necessarily have a clear process in place for people to submit vulnerabilities, or the resources available for someone to patch them. Even if you surmount those hurdles, you may not know who's actually using your open source code and needs a patch. "A lot of what we talk about is there’s a vulnerability, what’s the workflow for...

51% of devs say they’re dealing with 100x more code than 10 years ago

Image
New research highlights the increasing demands being placed on developers—in volume, variety, and velocity. The research, sponsored by  Sourcegraph , is probably unsurprising for anyone working in the development industry. For others, it shows the uphill battle faced by developers. 500 developers across North America were surveyed by Dimensional Research for the report. All participants are responsible for software development at companies with more than 200 developers. The main takeaway from the research is that 51 percent of the developers report having to deal with 100 times more code than a decade ago. Developers are also being asked to deal with a greater variety of “development dimensions” than ever before. More than 60 percent report a significant increase in dimensions including architecture, supported devices, use of open source, number of platforms, and more. Along with the increased volume and variety of code, developers are being asked to provide it faster than ever. 92...

Paytm launches its own mini app store

Leading fintech startup Paytm is at loggerheads with technology giant Google after its payments app was taken off Google Play Store citing violations Paytm’s move is perhaps a direct fallout of Google mandating that developers listed on its Play Store use its billing service Digital payments firm  Paytm  has launched a mini-app store to support Indian developers, in a direct challenge to Google’s dominance in the space. The launch of the store follows the payment app being temporarily removed from  Google’s Play Store  on 18 September for violating developer guidelines on real-money gaming. While the removal of the app may be a trigger, Paytm’s move is perhaps a direct fallout of Google mandating that developers listed on its Play Store use its billing service. Google levies a 30% commission on any transaction made for a digital product or service through its in-app billing system. Paytm said the mini-app store will help developers take their products to the masses a...

Graphic design apps are now as fundamental as Excel — here’s how non-designers get up to speed

In today’s digital landscape, it’s critical to understand why design matters beyond the realm of the creative department. After all, marketing, branding, sales, business collaborations, and partnerships all hinge on the strength of a company’s branding and its consistency.  It’s no longer enough to have a couple of graphic designers to shoulder the burden of this responsibility. In the social media age, a truly successful brand needs seamless harmony across different platforms, whether it’s in traditional advertising, communications, or customer service. It’s not just about engaging aesthetics, but ensuring that anyone who needs to work with the brand image can do so quickly and effectively. Not only does it save time and money, but everyone can stay on the same page with a greater sense of productivity. We spoke with Adobe’s Principal Solutions Consultant, Bart Van de Wiele, who helps companies navigate rapidly-changing digital media through Adobe’s formidable suite of creative so...
